Truly Unique Disc Golf
A little over a week ago I was home watching the Buffalo Bills win their first playoff game in 25 years. Shortly after the Bills won, I received an email from the founder of Truly Unique Disc Golf, Derek Broockerd, telling me I earned a spot on their Deputy team for the 2021 season! I couldn’t be more honored and privileged to accept the position! Let’s just say this is a day I will never forget!
Truly Unique Disc Golf is a company that supports the Trilogy brand of discs (Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64°, and Westside Discs) by Derek Broockerd out of Belton, Missouri. Their goal is to grow the sport of disc golf and provide discs that are unique, whether it be a cool stamp, dye, or blend of plastic.
I thought it would be nice to get to know the founder a bit and Derek agreed to answer a few questions for me, so let’s get right into it!
Q: How did you get into disc golf?
A: One summer, while taking a weekend trip to the Ozarks with my sister-in-law and her husband, he asked if we wanted to hit this local course with him. I had seen the cages around parks here and there and always enjoy any kind of knew athletic game. I joined him and instantly was hooked. I played every weekend after trying to get better and better.
Q: How long have you been playing?
A: I started disc golfing in 2013 I believe it was.
Q: What motivated you to start selling unique discs online?
A: I used to buy on the Facebook Marketplace from a guy who went to DDs [Dynamic Discs] warehouse and he would come back and charge higher prices for anything unique he found. I always felt like the disc didn’t cost him any more and he picked it from the pile so others couldn’t get it, so why should he be charging more. Being newer to the game I spent a lot on discs, and one day a gentleman at DD asked me if I had ever considered a wholesale account given the amount I spend. At that time it wasn’t required that you have tax ID and all the sales tax exemption and things you need now. So I tried it. I drove to the warehouse and hand-picked a selection, but only charged the normal stock price and I sold out in 24 hours. I then turned around and did this again every week. Suddenly it turned into a business. I was motivated by the idea of being able to help disc golfers get cool/unique stuff without having to pay a premium.
Q: How did you align with Team Trilogy?
A: Being local to KC the events were mainly ran by Scott Reek and DDKC. Naturally this made my bag slowly migrate to being all Trilogy and being that I had started a small business around it that was the plastic I had easiest access to as well. When the idea of Team Trilogy came up there was only 3 of us in Kansas City who applied. Scott Reek, myself, and my brother in law. I was accepted as the last member on the first day of applications. I’ve been a part of TT ever since.
Q: What’s your favorite disc?
A: Old digital weight TP Stag. I’ve swam many cold ponds to recover this exact disc. It’ll likely stay in my bag forever.
I’m looking forward to growing myself along with TUDG this year and have a lot planned. So far it’s been a great experience getting to know the other team members and can’t wait to see what we can produce as a team.
